Why are Hand Veins Treated?

Unwanted, bulging Hand Veins can be a cosmetic nuisance, marking ones actual age. Patients who choose to have their large, unattractive hand veins corrected do so for cosmetic reasons or as an "anti-aging" remedy, in order to gain a more youthful appearance.

What Causes Hand Veins to Become Enlarged?

With age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. This allows the veins to bulge out and look more prominent. Such veins are usually not diseased or painful, but are simply not attractive.

How are Hand Veins Treated?

We treat Hand Veins as we do Leg Veins - by injecting them with a sclerosing solution (sclerotherapy). This irritates or damages the vein walls, causing them to heal together, close off, and form scar tissue that becomes reabsorbed by the body. The hand has a deep network of veins beneath the surface that continue to transport blood towards the heart. Correction of enlarged hand veins has brought a more youthful look to the hands - without surgery.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Patients who have had sclerotherapy have reported little discomfort. The injections feel like little pin-pricks.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

You will most likely need to come in for at least two to three separate treatment sessions, spaced a couple weeks apart, so that the same veins may be re-injected. You may begin treatment on the same day as your consultation, if you wish.
